Born in Philadelphia, McMaster graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1984, and later earned a Ph.D. In American history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. McMaster University, located in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, is a public research university that was founded in 1887 through funds bequeathed by Canadian Senator, William McMaster.
