    Folks,
Even though I believe .mac to be overpriced for the value, after buying a couple of iMacs for my extended family, I decided that it made sense to by a Family Pack license of .mac because the members of my extended family aren't that computer savvy, so making photocasting and sharing files as easy as possible was a priority.
All the retailers I called had no stock on .mac retail boxes and told me they were on backorder. After placing an order a few days ago via the Apple Store online, the original ship date was estimated 1-3 weeks, but my order now shows an estimated ship date of October 24th.
I can only hope that this means that the .mac service and retail boxes are going to get released in late October with new functionality. I'm not going to hold my breath, but I can't figure why something as simple as a .mac retail box with an activation code is backordered more than a month since placing my order unless something was afoot.
I'll secretly wish for Merom MBPs at the same time of course. :D
    Gavin.

Its not supposed be be less functional than the app that came before it.
I would think themes would fall under the 'form' category, rather than 'function'

    I installed untrackerd.
So since there is no answer to my earlier question, I take it that the posters who take issue with the tracking have not bothered to correct the issue on their phone and desktop, which would seem like they care more about posting complaints than being tracked.

    Well that was fun ....
I am not entirely sure everything is running right, i am doing one work unit every 26 hours on the mac... its the SMP client and its a dual core 2.8ghz .. i get the feeling if i were running it on my bootcamp partion it would be better plus then i could utilize the graphics processer as well
however i installed ubuntu on the other 3.06ghz pc and well lets say that folding doesn't like it ... so i am now installing open Suse... so far so good ...

I am not a webdesigner so could someone explain the TEXTAREA upgrade? It sounded like a good idea when I read it, but it seems to have struck a nerve with a couple people, and I'm not sure why. I'm guessing it would be like if I went to an art auction and bought a painting by Monet, I bring the painting home and realize that the wallspace I have for it isn't wide enough, so I grab a corner of the painting a pull it down, hence making it skinnier and fitting my wall? Nobody would ever consider doing that to a Monet, yet isn't this what the new TEXTAREA feature does?

this conversation to me sounded more like we were talking about the iPhone2 or whatever needing NEW FEATURES to make it stand out from the crowd even more. i agree that the iPod interface would make the phone experience more familiar to a lot of people and the mp3 player portion much much better then all the mp3 phones out all ready, but its not something new that the other mp3 phones don't already do.
    does that make sense?
Let me ask you this: besides the scroll wheel, what has Apple ever done on the iPod that is new? It was not the first mp3 player. It was not the first hard-drive based player. It was not the first player to offer photo browsing. It was not the first player to offer video playing. It was not the first player to offer games. Well, you get the idea.
So the iPod has never been about offering different features. Rather, the iPod success story has been based on different things: 1) elegance/ease of use, 2) smaller/cooler design, 3) 'hipness' factor.
I don't see why Apple couldnt leverage all 3 of the above for the iPhone.
    1) Apple could make the iPhone easier to use than other phones. Nokia and SonyEricsson already have pretty decent user interfaces, but Apple could still top them. Again, it's a matter of degree and Apple tends to get the little details 'right'. Plus Apple's solution for synching with the computer will probably more seamless than with any other phone
    2) Apple has proven to be extremely adept at miniaturization. Ask yourself this: why hasn't someone made a 15.4' laptop that is 1' thin and weighs only 5.6 lbs like the MBP? Why is no other 30 GB or 80 GB MP3 player as thin and light as the iPods? With both its Macs and iPods, Apple has proven that one of its strenghts is putting consumer electronics in a tiny, appealing package. I expect the same from the iPhone.
    3) The Apple brand is still quite potent. If Moto could sell so many of their craptacular RAZR phones based on 'coolness factors' alone and very other redeeming features, can you imagine what Apple and its marketing machine could do with the iPhone? The mind staggers.
...and that's why the numbers we're hearing through the grapevine are 10-15 million iPhones sold by the end of 2007 alone. I think those kind of numbers are pretty spot-on.

You mean they can't just put out an update to the app which includes a notice about the new HTML5 web-site? They *have* to be able to email it to you, call you, and send it to your home address in paper form?
Of course not. Since that app would not be allowed because the HTML5 version would offer cheaper prices - which is against the app store rules ;-)

To be honest, it's only another iPhone rumor to add to the mix. The idea that Apple is ploughing ahead with new models is nice, but let's wait for v1.0 first before we start speculating about 'new' features.

I love Breakout, and got Colibricks from the App Store for my iMac. Similar, but not the same.
Centipede for the iMac would be killer!

Well, it would have been nice but my company (delivers packages, owns Memphis) switched to Exchange about a year ago, mostly because Notes was too damned expensive. Oh well.
For those of you still working in organisations using Lotus Notes, I guess this is good news.

Is there anything available for the ipod touch that will let me transfer/view/save pictures off my digital camera? Something like what is available for the ipad? Apple Ipad Camera Connector (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC531?mco=MTczNzY0NDg). Or will that work with the touch? Thanks.

Not true.. I am the Art Director for a Art department that makes grocery store ads.
Soda is not a common loss leader since it's DSD Pepsi/Coke keep close price controls.
I usually see produce and meat used as loss leaders..
    --------------------------------------------
Another point... I expect that TJ MAXX just bought up a bunch of the Refurbished iPads and is taking a $50 loss on each to get people in the stores.
That's true: soda/chips not loss leaders but maintained by rack jobbers.
